Welcome to the No Dumb Questions online community!
No Dumb Questions, the documentary film, holds a special place in my heart, and I am so excited to be part of an online community inspired by the informal question-asking and story-telling of the film. I'd like to share a bit of my own story with you...
Over ten years ago, when I was a senior in high school, I was visiting my father, stepmother, and half-sister over holiday break. My 4-year old sister and I were coloring at the kitchen table, when she suddenly looked up at me. "Some people are girls on the inside and girls on the outside, like you and me", she explained. "Some people are girls on the inside and boys on the outside, like Dad." I was confused by her statement, but within an hour, my father had explained that (s)he was becoming a woman.
I had so many questions... "What does it mean to become a woman?", "Will you still be my dad?", "What exactly does 'transgender' mean?" Honestly, I was afraid to ask most of them, afraid to hurt or offend my parent. It took a while to answer my own questions and feel confident saying "she's my dad".
This community is a place for you - friends, family members, partners, or allies of transgender people - to ask those questions and get answers, without the fear of offending the transgender people in your life. This is also a place for you - transgender people, friends, family members, partners, or allies - to share your personal stories with people who are asking their own questions. I've shared my story as a Video - check out the homepage to view it! You can also post a video or share your story in writing. Click on 'Stories' and 'Tell Your Story'. Then click on 'Start a Discussion' to share your story. If you need some tips to get you started, check out 'How to Tell Your Story' in the same section.
